Character: You Are What You Eat?
I’m glad the old adage, “You are what you eat” isn’t completely true. If it were, some of my photos from yesteryear would look like a giant brownie with a bad perm. Yet there is something to be said for examining our diet. Regardless of where we find ourselves on the scale, we pretty much know the routine of eating a healthy diet. We know, but do we follow through? I know perfectly well that a carrot is by far a better choice than a piece of French Silk pie. But when you place them side by side is it even a contest? To my friends who have made eating right a lifetime choice, they would inevitably choose the carrot knowing that down the road they won’t have to worry about the additional pounds that would result from the pie.
Those of us who chant the saying, “Life is short; eat dessert first” eventually have to pay the piper (or in this case the Pound Piper) wondering the whole time how it happened. Deep down we know how it happened. But admitting to it doesn’t always come easily.

Admitting flaws in our character can be difficult as well. Some might say, “I’m a redhead. It’s the way I am” or “I’m just hot-tempered” or “I’ve always been a Worry Wart.” As if labeling our actions somehow excuses them.
Galatians 5:22 reminds us…
“But what happens when we live God's way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard—things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people. We find ourselves involved in loyal commitments, not needing to force our way in life, able to marshal and direct our energies wisely,” MSG.
While some choices in our lives may seem like a French Silk Pie moment, we understand that “we are what we eat.” Choices in our character made today will affect who we become tomorrow. So next time you’re offered an opportunity to build a strong, healthy character—smile and choose the “carrot.” Friendz will notice the new you and, more importantly, see Jesus.
