A precious older saint wanted to calm my fears about preparing a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. After sharing my concerns about roasting the turkey she assured me that I had nothing to worry about. After a thoughtful pause she decided to share with me the story of her last family feast.
Lynn was a wonderful mother, grandmother and amazing cook. She was always busy doing a hundred things at once, and in spite of her daughters' concerns she still insisted on preparing the entire family feast. Lynn stumbled out of bed in the wee hours to start the turkey. It was dark, cold, and far too early to be up on a holiday, but someone had to clean, stuff, and begin the bird baking ritual for a large family.
After returning to bed for a few more hours of sleep, Lynn hurried into the rest of the meal preparation before the extended family arrived. She struggled with the fact that she couldn't find her reading glasses and had to ask for help with a few of the recipe cards that were hard to see.
When the family gathered around the table, grace was said, and the first slices were taken from the beautiful golden brown turkey. A clunk in the serving bowl caused quite a stir around the table. Yes, more than stuffing was removed from the bird, Lynn’s glasses were finally found. In hindsight, Lynn learned how to pass along a tradition, and has given the early turkey preparation to the next generation.
